Annie E. Casey Foundation's Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiatives (JDAI) launched in five Ohio counties in 2010. JDAI focuses on the juvenile detention component of the juvenile justice system because youth are often unnecessarily or inappropriately detained at great expense, with long-lasting negative consequences for both public safety and youth development.
In conjunction with JDAI and the National Juvenile Defender Center, the Children's Law Center, Inc, will be examining defense advocacy at detention hearings and appointment of counsel issues in each of the Ohio JDAI Counties. The National Juvenile Defender Center has developed the Ten Principles for Providing Effective Defense Advocacy at Juvenile Delinquency Detention Hearings, which will serve as a guideline for detention advocacy for the defenders in the five counties.
